Description and goal of the project:

The Fabaceae family, including soybean (Glycine max) are important agricultural and food plants, which provides raw materials for versatile application. Due to legal regulations and controversy arising around GMO, cultivation of non-GMO soybean is highly significant.

Quality of the seeds used for sowing determines the yield of the crop and nutritional value of the harvest. Legislation deimposes farmers under obligation of the application of certified seeds, from authorized supplier, which assures high germination and the highest purity of seeds.

The market of certified seeds of soybean in Poland currently struggles with two main issues causing yield decrease and losses in the state budget, which are: lack of appropriate methods of storage and counterfeiting and illegal trade of certified seeds. Despite maintaining modern agricultural standards, the Fabacaea certified seeds are exposed to loss of their high quality during the long storage at improper conditions at farmer’s premises. Under high humidity their germination drastically decreases and seeds are more vulnerable to microbial contamination.

The research conducted whithin the project aim to develop new methods of storage of certified Fabaceae seed material, ensuring maintenance of its high quality and protection against falsification. It is planned to launch new biodegradable packaging based on impregnated paper in the market. The proposed packaging system, so-called active packaging, will contain substances influencing the quality of the content stored: among others, the biodegradable impregnating substance, protecting the package against migration of humidity and the mild antimicrobial agent, which will prevent microbial contamination. The packaging will comprise multi-level security system against forgery and elements enabling easier identification of seeds origin.
