Elaboration of innovative technology to produce constructionally complex high quality light metal alloys precision casts

Project realized within Applied Research Programme

Project aim:

This project aim was the elaboration of experimental and industrial technology to produce constructionally complex machine and device parts from magnesium and aluminum alloys (silumines) using lost-wax casting.

The composition of ceramic for manufacturing molds was optimized. Ceramic mold was made from ecological, inorganic binders and ceramic materials ensuring stability of its technological properties – resistance to thermal shocks and lack of reaction on the border between mold and liquid metal.

The casting process was conducted in directional cooled molds, according to the technology developed by Instytut Odlewnictwa (Foundry Research Institute) (patent application no. P396030), or in the molds in the temperature of 60÷80° C. Beside the standard alloys, magnesium alloys with chromium and vanadium addition was researched and applied for patent protection. Silumines patented by Politechnika Łódzka (Lodz University of Technology) were used. The casts were the subjects to the complex control tests of their physicochemical properties.

The aim of the task conducted in ICSO “Blachownia” was the elaboration of new generation of polymer cooling liquids, environmentally friendly, characterized by operational durability, cooling kinetics adjusted to application, no proneness to react with the metal surface, either in solid or liquid state, also low vapor pressure, toxicity, combustibility and possibility to use the elaborated liquids for directional cooling of ceramic molds spilled with liquid alloys of magnesium and aluminum.

Project was realized within scientific consortium composed of: Instytut Odlewnictwa, Instytut Ciężkiej Syntezy Organicznej “Blachownia”, Instytut Metali Nieżelaznych (Institute of Non Ferrous Metals) Skawina branch, Politechnika Łódzka, Przedsiębiorstwo Innowacyjne Odlewnictwa Specodlew (Specodlew Innovative Castings Company) and Spółdzielnia Pracy Armatura (Armatura Work Co-op) with co-financing from The National Centre for Research and Development.
