Functional and safe to use natural hygiene cosmetics based on waste material (pomace) from Polish vineyards

PROJECT CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION within framework of European Funds for Smart Economy Programme (EFSE) 2021-2027
Priority 2: Innovation-friendly environment
EFSE Action 02.07 Proof of Concept
Intermediate Body for the 2nd EFSE Project: Foundation for Polish Science
Beneficiary name: Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Heavy Organic Synthesis “Blachownia”
Industry partner in the project: Onlybio.Life S.A.
Project number: FENG.02.07-IP-05-0439/23
Project value: 696 158,40 zł
Funding amount: 696 158,40 zł
Implementation period: 01.09.2024 – 31.08.2025
Project aim:
The subject of the project is the development of an innovative technology for the production of personal care products, using grape pomace, which is a waste material generated during wine production. The project aims to verify the research hypothesis concerning the possibility of using the developed process of Chemical Loan Extraction to produce innovative cosmetics, rich in bioactive compounds obtained from the waste material from wine cultivation. The results of the project are in line with current expectations and requirements of consumers in terms of demand for functional and safe cosmetics for humans and the environment.
Tasks, activities to be carried out as part of the project:
The Project will develop technology to produce cosmetics that contain natural raw materials and bioactive compounds extracted from wine grape pomace.
The project will be implemented according to a concept developed by Prof. Tomasz Wasilewski and Zofia Hordyjewicz-Baran, PhD.
The research will use an innovative approach to cosmetic production. In traditional solutions, extracts are added during the main process of cosmetic mass production. In the proposed solution, the extraction process is one of the steps in the manufacture of the cosmetic, and the extraction medium is an aqueous solution of the chemical compounds that are the ingredients of the target cosmetic. The proposed cosmetic manufacturing method includes a key step referred to as “Loan Chemical Extraction” (LCE), defined as “extraction using ingredients borrowed from the final product”. With this pragmatic approach, the need for additional purification of the extract obtained is eliminated.
The project will be implemented in the formula of effective cooperation between the scientific unit Łukasiewicz-ICSO ‘Blachownia’ and Onlybio.life S.A. from bydgoszcz – one of the fastest growing companies in the natural cosmetics industry in Poland which is interested in implementing the research results in its own activities. It is an innovative cosmetics company with a strong position in the cosmetics industry. The company’s mission is to create cosmetics that are both effective and safe for health and the environment, by which the company declares the use of only natural, organically grown or recycled ingredients in its products.
The cooperation with the company was initiated by Professor Dr. habil. Eng. Tomasz Wasilewski, who co-created the cosmetics present on the market, served as R&D director for many years and is familiar with the company’s business profile and needs.
The work in the project is the result of an intensively developed scientific and research area related to cosmetics and detergents at the Institute. These activities are initiated by Prof. Tomasz Wasilewski, together with Zofia Hordyjewicz-Baran, PhD, Leader of the Analytical Research Group, they are carrying out scientific work on new technologies leading ultimately to extremely interesting solutions in the field of cosmetics and detergents.
The Team’s work to date has resulted in laboratory-scale full-fledged innovative cosmetics. The works resulted in patent applications, which constitute the IP background of the Project. The works foreseen in the Project in question constitute a kind of a link between the phase of laboratory works and their commercialisation.
Target groups:
Potential recipients of the Project’s results can be cosmetic companies in Poland and abroad, which are looking for innovative solutions enabling creation of high quality knowledge-based cosmetic products. However, the recipient directly interested in the results of the Project (according to the Letter of Intent concluded) is Onlybio.life S.A. company.
The grape pomace for the study comes from the Cwielong-Olszewski Family Vineyard, established in 2013 by wine lovers, located in Balcarzowice, on the border between Opole and Silesia. The wines produced by this winery have won numerous awards in national and international competitions. The winery is actively involved in promoting oenotourism and winemaking, and is very open to scientific and research cooperation with the Institute.
